What to expect from your appointment

Our GPs provide expert assessment, diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of health conditions. Whether you have a new medical problem, an ongoing health concern or need advice about your health, we’re here to help.

Our aim is to provide the right care, at the right time. During your consultation, your GP will listen to your concerns, discuss your symptoms and work with you to develop a personalised plan of care.

What can a GP help with?

Our GPs can assess and manage a wide range of health concerns, including:

  • New illnesses and symptoms
  • Long-term medical conditions
  • Mental health concerns
  • Women’s health
  • Men’s health
  • Children’s health
  • Skin conditions
  • Joint, muscle and back problems
  • Minor infections
  • Medication reviews
  • Health advice and preventative care

If further investigations or specialist care are required, your GP can arrange appropriate tests, referrals and follow-up.

During your appointment

Your GP may:

  • Discuss your symptoms and medical history
  • Perform an examination where appropriate
  • Arrange blood tests or other investigations
  • Provide medical advice and self-care guidance
  • Refer you to a hospital specialist or another NHS service
  • Arrange follow-up appointments where necessary

In many cases, advice, reassurance or self-management may be the most appropriate treatment.

FAQs

Children under the age of 16 should normally attend appointments with a parent or legal guardian. If someone else is bringing your child to the appointment, we may need confirmation that they have your consent to make decisions about your child’s care. In some circumstances, we may need to contact a parent or guardian before treatment can be provided.
Young people may be be able to attend appointments on their own if they are considered able to understand their health needs and make informed decisions about their care. This depends on their age, maturity and the nature of the consultation and will be assessed by the clinician.
Yes. You’re welcome to bring a family member, friend or carer to your appointment. If you need an interpreter or have any accessibility requirements, please let us know in advance where possible.
